This helmet saved my life

The only reason I can type this testimonial today is I was wearing my Sterling helmet yesterday. My right cheekbone and eye socket are a swollen, leaking, psychedelic riot of purples and reds, and my beard is made of road rash. My ear is a stitched, painful mess with 1-3 stitches in 5 locations. There’s a bit of road rash on my right shoulder, too. A small cut over my right eye. My feft side is fine. Not a scratch. Left thumb is weirdly numb, however, along with a strain and bruising below left ring and pinky finger. While my helmet sustained scrapes and other crash damage, my teeth, lips, nose and chin are fine.

Bad, but not life threatening. It could have been so much worse.

So what happened? With the exception of a vague recollection of my front wheel jamming, I don’t recall anything other than being on my bike one second then experiencing a hideous, violent head slam into a brick wall; that would be the road.

Thankfully, CT scan and X-rays were clear.

I picked up my road bike today from the local fire fighters who were kind enough to store it overnight. After seeing the left brake lever bent inwards, it all makes sense. When I descended onto the road over the flattened curb, my front wheel locked when it hit a stone in the gutter, immediately twisted 90 degrees right and my bike pitched straight down (hence bent left lever and sore left hand). I went butt over teakettle in nanosecond, and post-holed head and face first into the pavement before I knew what hit me. I suspect shock erased the preceding few moments. I’m told it’s common before traumatic events.

Those rocks were never in the gutter there before. I ride this route almost every day. And this morning, when my wife went to find my lost earring (found!), just as she’s about to warn a cyclist about these rocks, he nailed them, too. He was OK.

Long story even longer: if not for my Sterling helmet, I’d be history. Just sayin’. Thanks, Rudy Project.

Perfect Fit

Straight out of the box this helmet fit perfectly without much adjustment. On first ride I actually reached up to make sure the helmet was there, it was very comfortable and light. Looks good and the fit with glasses is perfect for my head shape.
