FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
English Harbour, Antigua – Team Beyond, a foundation of two endurance athletes raising dollars and awareness in the fight against hunger and cancer in America, has successfully completed the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, better known as the World’s Toughest Rowing Competition, in U.S. record-breaking time. Teammates Phil Theodore and Daley Ervin rowed 3,000 miles from Spain to the Caribbean in 45 days, 9 hours, and 21 minutes, shattering the previous U.S. Pairs Division record by 7 days.
During their brutal excursion across the Atlantic, Phil and Daley encountered tropical storms, 40-foot waves, sleep deprivation, seasickness, and multiple instances of capsizing. “This race is really hard to compare to anything that we’ve done to date,” Phil shared. “It is an incredible challenge both physically and mentally. We never doubted our ability to get across despite complete electrical failure and a multitude of other issues. We had some epic highs and low, but managed through them.”
“As a former high school and collegiate rower I can attest to how crazy a feat this is” said Paul Craig, Co-Founder and CEO or Rudy Project North America. “It is truly inspirational what they accomplished for their Foundation, US Rowing, and anyone out there with a dream to push the boundaries of what is possible. We were all cheering for Phil and Daley every step of the way, through thick and thin. From all of at Team Rudy, we salute you.”
Team Beyond relied on Rudy Project’s prescription eyewear technology through the entirety of this grueling competition. “The Rudy sunglasses were an essential piece of our everyday kit,” Phil said. “We wore our prescription glasses almost the entire trip, except while sleeping!”
Utilizing Rudy Project’s unbreakable ImpactX-2 lenses, Phil and Daley’s individual prescriptions were digitally surfaced onto the optical backside of their sunglasses for edge-to-edge coverage. ImpactX-2 lenses are also photochromic, which means they automatically adapted to the ever-changing light conditions at sea.
Phil and Daley competed in the World’s Toughest Row for so much more than a record-breaking time. The team’s charity, The Beyond Hunger Foundation, is committed to solving the hunger crisis in America. Using extreme endurance races as a platform, this foundation supports organizations that are helping change the nutritional landscape in America. Even though the race is over, Phil and Daley aim to raise $1 million dollars in order to solve this growing crisis.
“Team Beyond will continue to look to inspire people through unimaginable feats,” Phil noted. “We will be seeking out and supporting those athletes that want to make a difference.”
