Ever since Tom Zirbel signed with the Jamis/Sutter Home Pro Cycling Team in late April, the North American peloton has eagerly awaited his performance at the USA Cycling Professional Time Trial Championships in Greenville, SC. The 20.7-mile time trial course is highly technical, consisting of three laps with many turns, several small climbs, and screaming fast descents. Tom charged out of the start house and was up to full speed in no time, immediately settling into a blistering pace. As he crossed all of the intermediate checkpoints, his times surpassed all of the previous riders. Tom flew across the finish line, stopping the clock at just 40:54, faster than the previous year’s winning time. As the remaining riders failed to match his time, it became apparent that Tom would at least finish in the top five. Ultimately, one rider, six-time national champion David Zabriskie, would best Tom’s time — but only by 31 seconds. For Tom, 2nd place was no disappointment. “I really gave it everything today,” said Tom after the race. “My Jamis bicycle was dialed and I paced my efforts perfectly, so I’m really happy with this result.”
