As the elite men rolled up to the start house for the Stage 2 Skyliners Time Trial, all eyes were on Jamis/Sutter Home’s Tom Zirbel — one of the favorites for a top placing. The challenging, 14-mile out-and-back course climbed nearly the entire distance to the turn-around point before riders flew back toward the finish. Tom raced down the start ramp, pumping his bike from side to side as he accelerated and then quickly settled into his aero position. His speed stayed high the entire way out and then stepped even harder on the gas on the way back, using his power and weight to maximum advantage. Tom came screaming across the line to stop the clock at 29:26, good enough for 2nd place. The effort also moved Tom up to 4th on the general classification, just seconds off of the podium and within striking distance of the lead. Luis Amaran also had a great day, finishing 10th and demonstrating the depth of the Jamis/Sutter Home squad.
