Rudy Project Sponsored Athlete: Yvonne van Vlerken Update

Posted by on

Yvonne van Vlerken/NED takes 3rd. Erika Csomor/HUN in spite of a good performance falls short again on 2nd beaten by unbelieveably strong Karin Thürig/SWI.

On a perfect day with a lot of sunshine and pleasant water temperatures a sensational starter field  lined up for the  „nicest Ironman 70.3 worldwide“ (quote of a lot of Pros and amateur-athletes).

Yvonne van Vlerken already exited the water in 4. after 29:02 min. However, Erika Csomor did put it on the line and was 1:05min. ahead already to create a shock tactic which later should pay off in regards to their duell, but was not good enough for a well deserved win.

Just 3 min behind Yvonne van Vlerken Karin Thürig (who swam 2min quicker than the previous year) rose from the water, a gap she equalised in less than 30 km on the bike and took the lead soon after. She also outdistanced the 2nd Csomor by around 3:40min. on the bike, van Vlerken even by 7 minutes who, unluckily just missed the group and rode alone the entire course.

Yvonne van Vlerken could catch Eva Wutti in the 2nd run-lap who paid for her outrageous but brave ride „with the worst half marathon of her life“ (original quote) and took over place 3. In spite of the quickest run of the ladies’ podium in 1:24:51 (the run distance measured 21.6 km due to construction-works), 2nd place remained out of reach.

In general the times of the top pros of men and ladies were slower than in the year before. Only Karin Thürig managed a clear improvement of her time. At the same time the 39-year-old Swiss announced her retirement from the top-class sport at the end of this season.

In the men´s race last year’s winner Filip Ospaly/CZE won before Austrian Michi Weiss and Paul Amey/UK.

Mario Erath, coached by Endurance Team/Thomas Vonach, got himself a ticket in his category M25 for the Ironman-70.3 World Championship Las Vegas in September.
