Rudy Project North America, exclusive distributors of Italian-made endurance sports gear, welcomed pro triathlete Ben Kanute to the family this week. Rudy Project has signed a multi-year partnership with the decorated American champion, who got his start in ITU races and took the world by storm last year as the runner up at IRONMAN 70.3 Worlds. Ben’s athletic skills strike a rare balance between domination in draft-legal triathlon and a stunning aptitude for longer course, and he looks to be a triathlon force to be reckoned with in the years to come.
“I knew Ben was an exceptional athlete and person the minute I met him. He’s very intentional – he’s deliberate in every decision he makes and he’s one of the most competitive athletes I’ve ever met.” said Chris Lupo, Sports Marketing Director for Rudy Project North America. “He’s energetic, hungry, and looking to leave his mark on the sport. We’re looking forward to working closely with Ben on some exciting product developments, and seeing his career flourish.”
Ben Kanute’s star has been on the rise throughout 2017 – he took a come-from-behind win at the 2017 Island House Invitational in an epic sprint finish, won Escape from Alcatraz in June, and took second at the 70.3 IRONMAN World Championship in Chattanooga. The Illinois native grew up swimming, biking, and running competitively, and he is a rare athlete in that he began racing triathlon at age 9, when most athletes find their way to triathlon from running or biking. Kanute was an impressive two-time collegiate national champion during his tenure at University of Arizona, and competed in Rio in 2016 as part of the USA Triathlon team, all before the age of 24. His success and competitive drive make him an ideal ambassador for Rudy Project, where constant innovation leads to some of the most advanced protective gear in triathlon and cycling.
“I’m excited to be part of the Rudy Project team,” said Kanute. “Their products, helmets and sunglasses, are phenomenal, and the quality is far above anything else that’s out there. I’m thrilled to be a part of a team that includes champions like Heather Jackson and Cam Dye, and to be wearing the #1 Helmet at Kona.”
2018 will be an exciting year for Ben, kicking off with the Abu Dhabi WTS race series in March. He’ll then go on to defend his Escape from Alcatraz title in June, and he’s looking for another shot at the title at 70.3 World Championships in September. Last year he texted his coach, saying “I can win this race,” and he’s looking to make good on that promise this year.
Kanute was recently profiled by innervoice.life, an online publication that focuses on endurance athletes and has interviewed triathletes, ultra-runners, pro cyclists, and photographers. The story is an intimate portrait of the understated triathlete, who already has more accolades to his name than most triathletes accumulate in an entire career. The articles dives into the influence Ben’s family has had on his pursuit of the sport, his biggest rookie mistake, and his work with the Challenged Athletes foundation, all told through his own words and accompanied by breathtaking photography. On and off the race course, Ben will be using Rudy Project’s most advanced and technically cool endurance gear, including the Boost 01 road aero helmet and the Backpack Pro 31. His favorite so far? “The Tralyx sunglasses – they’re so light you forget they’re there, and the fit is effortless. No fogging no matter how many watts I’m pushing.”
“We’re proud to have such a world-class athlete on the team,” said Paul Craig, President and Co-Founder of Rudy Project North America. “Ben leads by example – he has the drive, the dedication, and the talent to make triathlon even better as a sport, and we’re thrilled to be his partners on the journey.”
