Road to Kona: Carrie Lester

Lester ran away from the competition and left them gasping in the dust at IRONMAN France in Nice earlier this summer. Lester had the women’s best bike split, with a searing time of 5:19:12, helped along by her Boost 01 road aero helmet. Having rounded out the top 10 last year in Kona with a fiercely competitive field, Carrie looking to be a strong contender this year.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

An astrologist.

What is on your mind as you prepare for Kona?

I try not to overthink about the outcome I want and just focus on getting the work done and be in the best shape I can be on race day.

What are three of your travel essentials?

Compression socks (yes I get fat feet), Patagonia jacket, wine opener.

What do you see as your biggest strength going into Kona?

Knowing that I am 100% mentally prepared having just done two of the hardest iron-distance courses in the world.

What was the last gift you gave someone?

An Alpe D’Huez Marmott toy for the cutest 10 month old I have ever seen! (editor’s note – it looks a little bit like a plush beaver – the toy, not the 10 month old)

What makes Kona different from any other race?

Everyone shows up 100% prepared. Throughout the year you race athletes at different stages of their season and preparation, but in Kona, everyone has prepared for this one race. It is the only World Championship.

What is your favorite Rudy Project piece of equipment?

Tralyx sunglasses – in any colour.

What do you love about the triathlon community?

The appreciation of getting outside and keeping fit and having the ability to travel the world doing so.

What would make this a perfect season for you?

Another good result in Kona would be great, but to be able race well there and then finish off the year with one or two more strong races would be my ultimate year.

How do you like to spend a day off?

Sleep as long as I want, coffee in bed, and then do whatever I never have time for! Go to the beach, see friends, girly stuff, anything I want!

What gear is Carrie sporting this year?
