NORTHSHORE CHAMPION:
THE HUNT FOR GLORY ON THREE WHEELS
Inline skating is one of the most challenging sports out there to do competitively. It combines the strategic maneuvering of a peloton with the pacing and distance of a marathon. Ben Brown is no stranger to the sport – since he was very young, he’s been skating competitively. This past September, he went for the title of Northshore Champion in Duluth, Minnesota at the NorthShore Inline Marathon. “Inline speed skating marathons are very exciting both to race and to watch. Skaters will be at a hard pace then all of a sudden one or two will sprint away and the rest and the group has to work together to catch them,” said Ben. “It rained on race day, and with the conditions how they were, there were few people who tried to sprint away from the group. It ultimately came down to the finish line where a world champion from Venezuela (Sebastian Guzman) and an American world medalist (Justin Stelly) finished in the same second. Their time and the time of the group was one hour and three minutes: very fast, especially in the rain. I had some of the most fun I have ever had on skates, even with the weather.” If you’re looking to get into competitive inline, you can learn more by following Ben on Instagram: @ben.brownsk8
